5 Simple Things Every Start-Up Can Do to Establish Their Social Media Presence

So you want to start your own business. Great! If you’re in the Los Angeles area, I hope you’re also at Start-Up Weekend. If not, definitely start following them on Twitter and hopefully get some good tips.
If you’ve been connected to the world in some way, you’ve heard that marketing is moving to the digital realm (more information on an upcoming blog post). If you don’t have a presence via social media, you’re missing out on so many potential clients and customers. Don’t write it off as something your company does need. Even if you rely solely on word of mouth, social media will greatly help you with that.
Heard of social media marketing and don’t know where to start? Here are 5 simple things every start-up can afford to do in order to establish their social media presence:
  1. Start a blog: Whoever told you blogging was dead was mistaken. Blogs are the rib of your company website. Not sure what to blog about? Subscribe to some newsletters about your field, give your spin on things, give insight to your company, etc. Check out my blog post about Microwave Blogging about quick places to get some content. For beginners who don’t know a blog from a vlog, try Tumblr and Posterous. If you have a little more experience, Blogger and WordPress will get you through. Don’t forget to register you blog with Technorati as well.
  2. Join Twitter and participate in tweet chats: Lots of people aren’t sure how Twitter can help their business grow, but it can definitely get the name out there. Start a branded Twitter account if you don’t already have one, and get involved in Twitter chats that pertain to your field of expertise. Here is a comprehensive list of different Twitter chats that occur on a regular basis.
  3. Register your company name on the base social networks: Even if you’re not quite sure how it can work for you, register a profile for your company on each of the base social networks. Try to use the same user name, which should be your company name, or at least a close variation of it. The point is to get the URL/username before someone else can. A list of the social networks to register for are coming soon.
  4. If you have a store front, participate in Foursquare: Foursquare has definitely grown on me. The location based service can help you when it comes to word of mouth and customer service. Say you have a business that sells goods. If users of Foursquare check in at your store, they can tweet that they’re at your store, spreading the word for you. If you offer incentives for checking in (discounts for first time visitors and the “mayor” of your store), people will flock to your store in due time.
  5. Comment on blogs: This kind of touches on #3. When you comment on other people’s blogs (please don’t spam them; take the time to read their article and post a meaningful comment), most places require you to leave your e-mail address and offer you a chance to leave your URL. Leave the link to either you company website or your blog (preferably). That way, if someone likes what you said, they’ll be inclined to see more of what you have to say.

These are things that won’t take absurd amounts of your time but can get your company listed on search engines (I’m not really the person who can give you a large amount of info on SEO but another blog post will reveal the easy way to start). Try these out so you can at least be visible in the online world.
